Teaching about Govt to Kids

I read this great post on Anti-State.com and I had to share it with you:

I think it is very important that we teach our children about the true nature of government. ... In my own experience as a father, I have discovered several simple devices that can illustrate to a child's mind the principles on which the modern state deals with its citizens. You may find them helpful too...... (continues)

I notice that people who believe this comic-book version of the Evil State don't want to move their families to state-free Somalia.

What, "you don't like this government, so you should just leave?" What is this, quote-a-republican day?

Actually, I don't like the idea of government forcing people to do what it wants through violence either. I also don't think it's such a bad idea to go somewhere else. I am very happy with my decision to do that myself. It's definitely a compromise. Certainly, packing up and leaving America would be a moral thing to do. But you wouldn't want to live somewhere like Singapore, China, North Korea, or Italy, with its blasphemy laws.

But Somalia, as much as I am interested in how it's going, is not an island. It happens to be surrounded by Hell, and an ignorant foreigner like me has to wonder if it's going to stay that way for long. But I'm no utilitarian--just because Somalia might change doesn't mean it isn't evil to force people to do things with violence.

It's not necessary to be drastic like that, but instead weigh one's options. Make a list. The top priority may be The Loved Ones. That's important. But there's nothing wrong with listing things like Economic and Personal Liberty, standard of living, stuff like that. Incidentally, Canada has more personal liberty AND more economic liberty, as well as better rent, and of course, the loved one. And the government is about 60% less morally abhorrent.

so the point is, you have to be persnally free before the political stuff comes in. I wouldn't want to move anywhere south of the equator, which answers the question, "why didn't the New Orleans folks want to move to colorado for free?" Answer: "Too cold."

Thanks for your brillant retort, mark plus. "If you don't like it, move". The standard gambit of the failed statist argument.
